I REALLY liked House of Leaves. Bohemian in execution, the book has lots of layers, and for some reason I just couldn't put it down. I found myself reading it within every free moment I got.

Not a newbie, but my answer hasn't budged for years: One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Confusion. Thread name doesn't match post. I am going with the post, which is what would one suggest for you.

Given that you list Animal farm, 1984, and Watershipdown under books on your profile- I'd suggest taking a look at Philip Roth's "The Plot against America".

It really would depend on what type of books you like, PM.

I agree with gpc - One Hundred Years of Solitude. I wish I read Spanish well enough to read it in the original.

You should try to simultaneously read the books Garcia Marquez writes in both languages. It is very beautiful prose he writes in Spanish and the sense of the words are thicker than the atmosphere he creates in English. Get a short book first of course it's easier to do than a long one like One Hundred Years of Solitude. I first started doing this with the poems of Neruda when I bought a book that had the English on one page and the Spanish on another.
