I agree with DB. My parents had a huge library and I was told I could read any book I wanted: no restrictions! It felt like a challenge to me. And then, my father would always read to my mother: poetry, a novel, something. I went back and read some of the books I read as a child: what a laugh, but even as a child, I found some books I did not understand fascinating. I remember one: The Portrait of The Artist As A Young Man.

My parents always read to me (and my sister). As my sister and I got old less often, but it was one of the things thrills of camping -- mom reading to us. She read Lord of the Rings to us (though I cheated and read ahead, but I had to pretend I had not), much of it while we were camping in British Columbia.
She also had a miscarriage that trip. She got out of the hospital in Trail and we drove up to our campsite where there was a TERRIBLE thunderstorm, so we sat in the car and she read to us.
