10: The Art of Happiness is a really good book; if only it were as easy to apply as it was to read. If you like that, I'd also recommend The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche. It's a well-written introduction to Buddhist thought about the processes of life and death...

I'll try the Art of Happiness, dbdbdb, every little helps....but my list would be way too long: from Pascal and Balzac to Kazuo Ishiguro and Michel Houellebecq....I have several favourite authors in almost each century of modernity....

(Hope you like The Art of Happiness, Cassandra!)
I agree - choosing one author is almost an impossible task. So, for the latter half of the 20th century, some of my favourite fiction authors would be: Jorge Luis Borges, Milan Kundera, Margaret Atwood, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Italo Calvino, Alberto Manguel (as an anthologist), and Haruki Murakami

Thanks, dbdbdb. I'll check out 'The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying'. I've heard good things about it. As far as applying the concepts in 'The Art of Happiness', I've been a practicing Buddhist for a few years and found it is a continual process, slowly changing how you see and handle things. I have a deep respect and love for the Dalai Lama. Find the books on Buddhism that are of his words to be the most realistic, wise, and applicable.

Hi agb! It's good to find an avenue that works for you. I enjoy work by the Dalai Lama but also appreciate Sogyal Rinpoche as well as Pema Chodron and Jack Kornfield... =)

When I was a child I had "favorite authors". I left childhood behind,
along with several hundreds of books, but once I reached adulthood
I read subject matter, not authors.

Whenever I visit anyone, the first thing I look for are books.
If you invite me to your house and you don't want something to
be read, better stash it away because I'm very likely to pick
it up and read it.

I read compulsively, everything from aardvark to zoology.

My sister died a year ago and left me her entire library of
books. God bless her cotten' picken' soul.

She gave me the following list of her "all time favorite books":

THE POISONWOOD BIBLE by Barbara Kingsolver
I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE by Wally Lamb
A FINE BALANCE by Rohitan Mistry
THE SAGE'S ENGLISH DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS

I'm looking forward to reading them. :0)

I liked Somerset Maugham.

I think I am too flighty and unstable/fickle to have favourite authors. But then I haven't been reading much but other than history for a long time! I think I read books more than authors but...

I would like to read some Kingsolver again

Laurie King
A.A. Milne
Barbara Kingsolver

Drat I keep thinking of books I haven't liked. It doesn't seem fair to count authors I have only read one book by, but how can I list an author if I only adore some of their work.

And it matters so much when you read some thing, if the message hits home.

On year when my sitter and I were sick she read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins and The Immoralist By Andre Gide and both of those books really had an impact.

My favorite reading material are mysteries that tackle real issues and feelings and are sad and a little funny.

Graham Greene

I dunno, time to go read.

The Poisonwood Bible is a marvellous read, although it is the only BK book I have read.

I absolutely loved The Bean Trees.

I think my favorite author is Francesca Lia Block, and perhaps George Orwell and Janet Fitch.
